The BambooHR app for ChatGPT lets you bring your HR data into ChatGPT and ask questions, pull reports, and take action using plain language. It's available in the ChatGPT app directory and uses the BambooHR MCP server under the hood.

What you can do
Once the app is active, you can ask ChatGPT things like:
- "Who's out of office this week?"
- "What's Alice's remaining PTO balance?"
- "Pull last month's headcount report and summarize it"
- "Show me all open requisitions in the Engineering department"
- "How many candidates are in interview stage right now?"
- "Create a time off request for me from June 10 to June 14"
- "List goals owned by the marketing team and which ones are overdue"
- "Update the work phone number on file for [employee name]"
ChatGPT can also combine BambooHR data with other apps you've connected. For example, you could pull headcount data and ask ChatGPT to draft a board update in the same conversation.
Prerequisites
Before connecting:
- A paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, Team, or Enterprise)
- A BambooHR account with appropriate permissions (see Access model below)
Setup
- In the ChatGPT interface, open the Apps section in the left navigation
- Browse to the relevant category (typically Productivity)
- Find and click BambooHR
- Click Connect
- Sign in to BambooHR and select the company you want to connect, if prompted
- Authorize the app
- Open a new chat and click the + button in the chat input
- Hover over More and select BambooHR if it isn't already selected
- Ask your first question

Access model
The app respects BambooHR's existing permissions. You'll only see and be able to act on data you're already authorized to access:
- HR admins get full company-wide access. This is the most powerful experience and what we've optimized for first.
- Managers can see and act on data for themselves and their direct reports.
- Individual contributors can see and act on their own information.
Future updates may expand non-admin access to basic directory info about other employees. For now, the manager and IC experience is intentionally scoped.
Guidelines for safe use
A few practices we strongly recommend any time you're connecting BambooHR data to an AI assistant:
- Keep your ChatGPT session focused. If you mix the BambooHR app with several other connected apps in the same conversation, data can move between them in ways that are hard to predict. For sensitive HR work, keep the session scoped to BambooHR.
- Require confirmation before tool calls run. ChatGPT prompts you to approve each tool call before it executes. Leave that turned on, especially for write actions like creating time off requests, updating employee data, or modifying goals.
- Verify ChatGPT's output before acting on it. Treat responses as a starting point, not a source of truth. Double-check numbers, names, and policy interpretations before making decisions.
- Opt out of model training. In your ChatGPT settings under "Data Controls," turn off the option that allows your conversations to be used for model training. HR data is sensitive and shouldn't end up in a third-party training set.
- Disconnect when you're done. If you're stepping away or done with HR work for the day, disconnect the BambooHR app. You can always reconnect later.
How authentication works
The app uses OAuth. When you click Connect, you're sent to the BambooHR login screen, where you sign in as you normally would. ChatGPT never sees your password, and token refresh happens behind the scenes - you don't need to manage it manually.
If you ever want to revoke access, you can do it from BambooHR or by disconnecting the app from the ChatGPT interface.
Troubleshooting
